CHARACTERIZATION OF TRITERPENE ALCOHOL AND STEROL FERULATES IN RICE BRAN OIL USING LC/MS/MS. JOURNAL OF FEDERATION OF AMERICAN SOCIETIES FOR EXPERIMENTAL BIOLOGY. 2003. v. 17(5). p. A768. Abstract No. 459-13. Interpretive Summary: The ACNC is interested in the health effects of dietary factors in diet that are not the traditional nutrients such as vitamins, mineral, etc. We are particularly interested in plant compounds, known as phytochemicals in the fruits, vegetables and grains. Rice bran is a by-product of rice processing that essentially is market as a food. However, there are several know n phytochemicals with biological effects that may be important in disease prevention. Rice bran oil has been reported to be rich in chemicals '-oryzanol. They has been extensively studied and reported to possess important pharmacological actions. In the current study, we examined rice bran for it's phytochemical composition using LC/MS/MS methodology and confirmed the presence of twelve known components of '-oryzanol were confirmed. In addition, however, using procedures developed in our laboratory, we found and characterized eighteen new components of '-oryzanol that have not been reported previously in rice bran oil. Future research in our laboratory will focus on quantitating these phytochemicals, determining their biological effects and ascertaining their health benefits. Technical Abstract: Rice bran oil is rich in y-oryzanol which contains triterpene alcohol and sterol ferulic acid esters. They has been extensively studied and reported to possess important pharmacological actions. In previous studies, inconsistent results on the numbers of compounds contained in y-oryzanol have been reported, primarily because of the analytical procedures employed. This poster describes an LC/MS/MS procedure for direct analysis of components of y-oryzanol in rice bran oil. Twelve known components of y-oryzanol were confirmed and eighteen components of y-oryzanol, which have not been reported previously in rice bran oil, were characterized by their mass spectral data in both negative and positive modes and their retention behaviors in HPLC. |
