Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The North Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service estimated North Dakota oat production in 2002 was 12.76 million bushels from 290 thousand harvested acres for an average grain yield of 44 bu/acre. The 2002 oat grain yield was well below the previous 5-year average of 56 bu/acre. Temperatures during May were unusually cold which limited plant development early in the season. Dry soil conditions along with unusually high day and night temperature later in the season, particularly during grain filling, severely limited grain yield in many areas of North Dakota. Because of the dry conditions in western North Dakota, a larger than normal proportion of the oat crop was harvested as forage to replace dwindling hay supplies resulting in lower acreage harvested for grain.
