DELIVERY OF A FATTY ACID AND BENZALKONIUM CHLORIDE TOPICAL ANTIMICROBIALS FROM A STARCH-OIL COMPOSITE DISPERSION. CONTROLLED RELEASE SOCIETY. 2001. v. 28. p. 5-6. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Palmitoleic acid(PA) was incorporated into a starch-petrolatum dispersion (Derm-Care(TM) Lotion). Microbiological studies showed that less than 20 minutes contact (0.5mg/cm2 of PA) was sufficient to kill more than 50 times each of Staphylococcus aureus and a methacillin-resistant strain of S. aureus, but was ineffective against gram-negative bacteria. By contrast, incorporation of benzalkonium chloride(BC) into Derm-care(TM) lotion was effective in killing both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. |
