Effective attraction of synthetic co-attractants to Carpophilus beetles in stone fruit orchards. Summerfruit Australia Quarterly. 5(2):10-11. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Australian Carpophilus beetles sent to America have cooperated with DPI scientist Dr. Mofakhar Hossain and USDA chemical ecologist Dr. Robert Bartelt in their efforts to identify and synthesize the volatile chemicals in fermenting fruit. Colonies of the main Australian species of Carpophilus were established under strict quarantine in the USDA Crop Bioprotection Research Unit laboratory in Illinois, USA. Dr. Hossain spent 3 months working in the USDA lab with Dr. Bartelt. They identified the volatiles from fermenting fruit juice and ripening peaches, then tested the response of the beetles to different mixtures of chemicals. |
