Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: For microbiologists, these are the best of times. DNA sequencing of dozens of microbial genomes has yielded an enormous amount of information that we have only just begun to analyze. Although genomes of microbes that cause human diseases received first priority, genomes of fungi that cause plant diseases are now being sequenced. Fungal genome sequence data in combination with the powerful tools of molecular biology and genetic engineering allow microbiologists to understand the population genetics of pathogenic fungi and to discover fungal genes important for plant disease. Microbiologists can now follow fungi across the border between the two very different worlds of the laboratory and the field, in order to design and evaluate strategies for prevention and treatment of plant diseases. |
