Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The book "Prokaryotic Nitrogen Fixation: a Model System for the Analysis of a Biological Process" reflects the extensive scientific effort that has gone into investigating a microbial process that is essential for life in our biosphere. As a good summary of research nitrogen fixation research, it is suitable for both the specialist and the nonspecialist. The information covered is extensive, and the list of contributing authors is a "who's who" of researchers well known in the field of nitrogen fixation. In this era of concern about ecosystems overloaded with nutrients and hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico, this book reminds us of the important role that diazotrophs play in the environment. As the editor has suggested, additional funds to support nitrogen fixation research could have very wide-ranging environmental and agricultural benefits. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in diazotrophs and biological nitrogen fixation.
