Citation: Lewis, T.M., Horton, D.R., Lattin, J.D. 2004. Anthocoris tristis Van Duzee, 1921, a synonym of Anthocoris whitei, Reuter, 1884 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Anthocoridae). Pan-Pacific Entomologist. 79:155.

Interpretive Summary: Anthocoris tristis, a small predatory bug in the Family Anthocoridae, was originally described in 1921 from a single female collected in Yosemite Valley. There have been no references to this species since that original description. We obtained the pinned specimen of the original female from the California Academy of Sciences, and showed that the insect is actually a specimen of anthocoris whitei, also a member of anthocoridae but a different species. The manuscript clarifies the original misidentification and places the original specimen in its true designation as A. whitei.

Technical Abstract: Anthocoris tristis (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae) was described in 1921 by Van Duzee from a single specimen collected in the Yosemite Valley, California. No additional collection records for this species have been made since the original description. We examed the holotype of A. tristis and found it to be a specimen of anthocoris whitei. This manuscript clarifies the original misidentification and designates A. tristis as a synonym of A. whitei.
