Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The response of overwintering cereal leaf beetle (CLB) adults to the male-produced pheromone, (E)-8-hydroxy-6-methyl-6-octen-3-one, was evaluated in a field trial in Oregon. Yellow sticky traps baited with 50 fig, 150 micrograms and 500 micrograms of pheromone in the presence of the plant-derived compound, (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate (HA), 500 micrograms of the pheromone alone, and HA alone were placed in a newly seeded grain field. Numbers of adults on each trap were recorded and lures replaced each week. Data from 5 weeks indicated that the synthetic pheromone alone was significantly active to both sexes. There was a positive dose response for the pheromone, but no effects were found for (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, either alone or in combination with the pheromone. The results are encouraging and indicate that the male-produced CLB pheromone is active in the field. Further research and potential use of CLB pheromone lures in the field will be discussed
