PREPARATION OF STARCH-G-POLY(ACRYLAMIDE) COPOLYMERS USING REACTIVE EXTRUSION. AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY ABSTRACTS. 2003. Abstract p. 204. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Graft copolymers of starch and poly(acrylamide)(PAAm) were prepared using a 30-mm corotating twin screw extruder with ammonium persulfate as the initiator. Feed rates at 50% moisture content ranged from 109 g/min to 325 g/min, with screw speeds in the range 100 rpm to 300 rpm. Under most conditions, monomer conversion was 80% or higher. Conversion was independent of residence time, and increased with feed rate, suggesting that degree of fill in the extruder is an important parameter in this process. Grafting efficiencies ranged from 50% to 80%. PAAm molecular weight increased with increasing monomer/starch feed ratio. Extrusion temperature had no significant effect on monomer conversion. These results indicate that starch graft copolymers can be readily produced by reactive extrusion. |
