Interpretive Summary: Our understanding of the genetic make-up of soybean chromosomes has recently broadened. This has been the result of a number of advances in genetic technologies. In this Soybean Monograph chapter the authors review these advances and discuss specific cases that helped advance our knowledge. The review takes the reader through a general description of soybean genetics, through development of molecular genetic road maps of chromosomes, gene discovery, and research designed to determine the function of unknown genes. This Monograph chapter will be a basic source of information for scientists and students entering into the area of soybean genomic research.

Technical Abstract: In recent years an understanding of the composition and organization of the soybean genome has developed. This has been the result of numerous advances in functional and structural genomics. This Soybean Monograph chapter offers a review of these advances and discusses specific literature supporting the advances in knowledge. The review progresses from a general description of the genome, through development of molecular genetic maps, gene discovery by way of Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) mapping and the public Expressed Sequence Tag (EST) project, to microarray development and functional genomics. This Monograph chapter will be a basic source of information for scientists and students entering into the area of soybean genomic research.
