Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Biodiesel is an alternative fuel derived from transesterification of agricultural lipids with a simple alcohol. It has many on- and off-road applications including transportation, locomotive, underground mining, marine, power generation and home heating oil fuels. Recently, the formulation of alternative aviation fuels with biodiesel has been proposed as a feasible approach for reducing harmful ground level emissions associated with commercial, military and general aviation. This article reviews the advantages and major concerns associated with blending biodiesel (methyl soyate) with jet fuels. The review points out that a significant level of organization and cooperation by several parties will be necessary to appropriately address fuel property concerns such as improving cold flow properties and oxidative stability; and to conduct a series of jet engine performance and emissions tests. |
