Technical Abstract: Corn fiber, a corn wet milling byproduct, contains about 70% carbohydrate (20% starch, 15% cellulose, and 35% hemicellulose) that can be utilized to produce a variety of value-added fermentation products, if a cost-effective process for its saccharification to fermentable sugars can be developed. In this presentation, our research dealing with the development of an environmentally friendly pretreatment and enzymatic saccharification process for production of fermentable sugars from corn fiber, including the efforts to develop novel and improved enzymes for use in such conversion, will be presented. The current state of available technology options and future prospects to reduce the conversion cost will be highlighted.
