Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Vegetable oils provide a number of advantages for application in metalworking lubricants. These include ease of biodegradablity impact, and free of any adverse health effect on operators. In addition, the fact that vegetable oils are obtained from renewable agricultural sources, makes them preferred alternatives to resource-limited petroleum, for maintaining sustained economic activity in lubrication and other industries. However, successful development of vegetable oil-based metalworking fluids, specially those that meet or beat petroleum-based products developed over decades, will require solving a variety of technical problems. In this work, we discuss some key chemical and physical properties of vegetable oils and how these properties impact the metalworking properties of corresponding lubricants.
