Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: MaizeDB, www.agron.missouri.edu, presents genetic maps integrated with available information about gene expression and function. The database includes map and function documentation, including certain raw data, tool information (probes, clones, genetic stocks), and data sources. This documentation allows for evaluation and reproducibility of the data. Genome function is represented both at the molecular level -- gene products and pathways -- and at the plant level -- inherited phenotypes and agronomic traits. The goals are two-fold: to permit discovery and to drive hypothesis-based research. The potential will be discussed for data access utilities now in production: 1) a BLAST server, adapted to retrieve map information and links to MaizeDB, ZmDB, CUGI, TIGR, and GenBank, in addition to the customary alignments and 2) CMAP, a dynamic, hypertext comparative map viewer, presented last year at this conference, now operates in a database environment and includes, in addition to maize maps, rice and sorghum maps. These tools are the result of collaboration with other groups, notably the Maize Mapping Project and the Rice Genome Program (Japan). MaizeDB is funded by the USDA-ARS.
