Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Although the acreage of hulless oats is small in Idaho and adjacent states, dairy producers, horse trainers, and specialty-market growers remain interested in this crop. Hulless oat improvement currently accounts for about 15% of the oat program effort at NSGGRF. Lamont hulless oat averaged 4926 lbs/A in groat yield in irrigated trials conducted at Aberdeen, 1999-2001. 'Monida' hulled oat averaged 4548 lbs/A in groat yield in the same trials. The Aberdeen hulless selection 95Ab12970 averaged 5580-lbs/A groat yield, 654 lbs/A better than Lamont. The best Aberdeen hulless oat selection for hulless expression, 95Ab13050, averaged about 99% hulless kernels and some of the hulless oat selections developed by North Dakota State University (e.g., ND960355) averaged over 99.5% hulless kernels in these trials. These selections represent marked improvement over some of the earlier hulless oat cultivars for hulless expression. A major problem frequently associated with hulless oats that continues to impede grower and user acceptance is grain-handling problems in elevators and mills. The time required for a standard amount of grain (one quart in this instance) to flow from a standard test weight device was measured to estimate handling characteristics. In trials grown at Aberdeen from 1997 to 2001, flow rates of hulless selections ranged from 4.7 to 8.1 seconds, with the hulled variety Monida averaging 4.7 seconds over all trials. This indicates that an easier handling hulless oat can be developed.
