OCTAN-1-OL/WATER PARTITION COEFFICIENTS OF P-BENZO- AND P-NAPHTHOQUINONES CORRECTED FOR PH EFFECT. JOURNAL OF CHEMICAL RESEARCH. 2002. (S):518-519. Interpretive Summary: Quinones are important molecules that participate in numerous biological processes involved in electron transfers. Many of these reactions, such as respiration and photosynthesis are localized in membranes. Therefore quinones have particular lipophilicity that enables them to reside in these non-polar environments. This manuscript reports the lipophilicity of several natural and synthetic quinones of interest. Technical Abstract: The effect of pH of the aqueous phase on the octan-1-ol / water partition coefficients (kow) of quinones was demontrated. The kow of a series of p-benzo- and p-naphthoquinones were determined using a mildly buffered aqueous phase (1 mM Hepes, pH 7.0) to correct for the pH effects on the lipophilicity of these compounds. |
