Technical Abstract: Rice blast disease caused by Magnaporthe grisea is a major constraint to rice production worldwide. The rice blast system is one of the best-characterized monocot model systems. The goal of this project is to understand molecular mechanisms of disease resistance using rice blast as a model system. A combination of genetic, biochemical and pathological approaches to understand the host defense response was undertaken. Current efforts on development of the dominant marker for the rice blast resistance Pi-ta gene and its utilization for new cultivar development will be presented.
