Interpretive Summary: Biological and molecular properties of virus species within the genus Rymovirus are briefly described. Recent taxonomic revisions of the genus are discussed. As currently defined, the genus Rymovirus consists of three virus species: Ryegrass mosaic virus, Agropyron mosaic virus, and Hordeum mosaic virus. Other virus species previously assigned to the genus have been reclassified.

Technical Abstract: A brief technical description of plant-infecting RNA viruses of the genus Rymovirus, family Potyviridae is presented. Described are biological properties, genome organization, and phylogenetic relationships among definitive and tentative virus species of the genus. The genus Rymovirus consists of three virus species infecting grasses and are transmitted by eriophyid mites. Ryegrass mosaic virus (RGMV) is the type species; Agropyron mosaic virus (AgMV) and Hordeum mosaic virus (HoMV) are definitive members of the genus. Wheat streak mosaic virus, brome streak mosaic virus, and oat necrotic mottle virus are no longer considered species of the genus Rymovirus and are reclassified in the genus Tritimovirus. The tentative rymovirus species Spartina mottle virus is only distantly related to rymoviruses and appears to be representative of a new genus within the family Potyviridae.
