Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This article summarizes ongoing research using biotechniques to develop Fusarium head blight (FHB) resistant wheat, barley and durum. Types of research include 1) transformation with antifungal and antitoxin genes and testing the resulting progeny for reaction to FHB in the greenhouse and field, 2) gene discovery to provide additional genes for transformation and better understanding of the mechanisms of resistance, and 3) molecular marker work including development of wheat SSRs and mapping genes associated with FHB resistance. A description of how these projects can assist breeding programs in the development of resistant cultivars is included.
