Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The design of effective control strategies for managing biological entities evolving within extensive environments is often considered a very difficult task. Major sources of complexity include: (1) the heterogeneity of the environment, which may occur at multiple scales; (2) the dynamics of biological entities and of agents affecting them, which may be nonlinear and coupled, and; (3) the presence of uncontrollable driving forces, such as the weather. These factors must be considered conjunctively to design effective plans for controlling invasive species, eradicating toxic biota, sustaining endangered species or mitigating the effects of an accident. The objective of this study is to present an approach to spatial decision support for bio-control that addresses the above sources of complexity. The Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS) combines GIS, mathematical models and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to aid in the development of management plans for controlling biological resources. The interplay of SDSS components permits the effects of heterogeneity, dynamics and driving forces to be assessed conjunctively. Example applications are demonstrated for nitrogen and phosphorus control in watersheds. Related results in image analysis with wavelets, quadtree- based mesh development and stochastic modeling are also presented.
