L.) are native, perennial, warm-season grasses adapted to a wide variety of soil conditions. These two species produce most of their growth during the hot, dry summer months when cool-season grasses tend to go dormant. However, both grasses are slow to germinate and thus can be readily overwhelmed by annual weeds. There are presently no herbicides registered for preemergence weed control in switchgrass and eastern gamagrass. There are reports in the literature that both grass species are tolerant of selected preemergence corn herbicides. However at this time such a use of corn herbicides for preemergence weed control in switchgrass and eastern gamagrass is a violation of federal law. This investigation was established to develop information concerning the tolerance of switchgrass and eastern gamagrass to preemergence applications of selected corn herbicides, prior to submission of requests to IR-4 for the establishment of research projects pursuant to obtaining label registrations. |
