Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Field trials were carried out to establish application rate, placement method and timing of entomopathogenic fungus, Metarhizium anisopliae (Metschnikoff) Sorokin against sugarbeet root maggot, Tetanops myopaeformis Roder larvae. Eleven treatments were applied: M. anisopliae 1x (1x10 13 conidia/acre) granule (gran.) Modified In-furrow (MIF), M. anisopliae 2x gran. MIF, M. anisopliae 4x gran. MIF, M. anisopliae 2x gran. spoon (S), M anisopliae 1x gran. MIF + Gaucho, Gaucho, M. anisopliae 1x gran. MIF + M. anisopliae 1x band spray at peak fly, M. anisopliae 1x band spray at peak fly, Counter (Ctr.) 1.8 # MIF, Ctr 1.5# MIF + Lorsban (Lors.) 4E (.66 pints/acre), and untreated control (UTC). A damage rating on a scale from 0 to 9 (0=no damage, 9=severe damage) was given to each plot and analyzed. At St. Thomas, ND, M. anisopliae 1x gran. MIF + 1x band spray treatment was significantly lower than UTC, but not statistically different from Ctr. 1.5# + Lors. 4E. At Crookston, MN, M. anisopliae 2x gran. S treatment was significantly lower than UTC and both M. anisopliae 2x gran. S and M. anisopliae 4x gran. MIF treatments were statistically similar to both commercial treatments. Both commercial insecticides in regards to recoverable sucrose/acre at St. Thomas, ND were significantly higher than UTC. M. anisopliae 1x gran MIF + Gaucho and M. anisopliae 1x gran. MIF + 1x band spray treatments were not statistically different from Ctr. 1.5#+Lors. 4E. M. anisopliae 4x gran. MIF and M. anisopliae 1x band spray treatments in regards to recoverable sucrose/acre at Crookston, MN were significantly higher than UTC. All M. anisopliae treatments at Crookston were statistically similar to both commercial insecticides.
