Technical Abstract: The role of maize, Zea mays L. ssp. mays, as one of the wellsprings of genetic advance today has wide-ranging purposes; it has historical and current moments, and it depends upon a deep and growing block of knowledge. Today's targets of modern genetic research with maize span a wide range of biology and include genomic organization and function, diversity and variation, phylogeny and derivation of cereals and other grasses, genetics of domestication, control of development, modulation of gene function, mechanisms of pest resistance, quantitative trait genetics, and last, but not least, heterosis. The beginnings of genetic study with maize were woven together by curiosity and practicality, a blend that continues today. Because of Maize Genetics Cooperation, efficient and rapid advance of science occurs in maize, through cross-testing of ideas and results, minimized redundancy of effort, and opportunities for teamwork.
