Interpretive Summary: The small red dry edible bean cultivar, 'Rojo Chiquito', was released cooperatively by Washington State University and USDA-ARS in 2001. Rojo Chiquito is the first ever cultivar developed in the U.S. belonging to the "Central American Small Red" dry bean market class. 'Rojo Chiquito has upright growth habit, multiple disease resistance, and stable yield. The bean is well adapted to Pacific Northwest growing conditions. 'Rojo Chiquito' will be produced primarily for export to Central America (Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and El Salvador) and to supply ethnic niche markets primarily in southern California and South Florida. A remarkable feature of this cultivar is its excellent canning quality. It yields nice firm beans in the can with good red color retention. This cultivar will help promote a new export market for U.S. growers, diversify the U.S. dry bean industry, and reduce balance of payments deficits.
Technical Abstract: 'Rojo Chiquito', small red dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) was developed cooperatively by the Washington Agricultural Research Center and the USDA- ARS and released in 2001. Rojo Chiquito has an upright short vine growth habit, mid-season maturity, multiple disease resistance and is adapted to the U.S. Pacific Northwest. The most unique feature of this cultivar is the eretention of a bright red color (seed color) after cooking.
