Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Citrus yellow mosaic is caused by citrus yellow mosaic badnavirus (CYMBV). The causal virion is a bacilliform particle measuring approximately 130 x 30 nm. CYMBV infected sweet orange leaf and bark phloem tissues were prepared for transmission electron microscopy. As previously reported, virions were found free in the cytoplasm of cells. Most of the virus was found in leaf tissue rather than in the bark phloem tissues. Some unusual unidentified bodies were found which may be inclusion bodies or viroplasmas. A comparison of the CYMBV and the associated structures with structures found with cauliflower mosaic virus also was made. Detailed knowledge of the distribution of the virus particles in plant tissue will lead to improved sampling procedures for phytosanitary purposes, and will also be of interest to citrus virologists, and to scientists interested in potential biotechnological applications of this virus.
