Interpretive Summary: Information on forage grass species and cultivars in needed by producers, land managers, and extension specialists to make wise choices for specific needs. USDA-ARS cooperated with the North Dakota State University Extension Service and USDA-NRCS in publishing a bulletin that discusses areas of adaptation and common use of grass species and describes specific traits of individual cultivars. This information will help in successful reclamation of disturbed land areas and in the seeding of pastures, hayland, and rangeland in North Dakota and the surrounding area.

Technical Abstract: Selection of appropriate species and cultivars is an important step in making successful grass seedings. This bulletin was designed to help producers and land managers in North Dakota select perennial grass species and cultivars for pasture, hay, rangeland, and conservation seedings. Areas of adaptation and common use of grass species are discussed, and specific traits of individual cultivars are described. A guide is provide to aid in selection of grass species and cultivars adapted to droughty, wet, saline, and alkaline sites. This information will help in reclamation of disturbed areas and in the seeding of pasture, hay, and rangelands.
