Technical Abstract: We examined adult and nymphal feeding behavior of Bemisia argentifolii Bellows and Perring on cotton abaxial leaf surfaces using a light microscope, and scanning, transmission and confocal electron microscopies. Stylet lengths for probing and penetration were estimated to be 140, 170, and 200 um for 1st and 2nd, 3rd, and 4th instars, respectively. For adults sthe average stylet length was 210 um. Most adult and nymph penetration sites were through tangential epidermal cell walls, not through the common radial wall between cells. Stylets produced bead-like salivary sheath pathways during penetration in leaf tissues. Salivary sheaths often curved and branched before reaching phloem tissues. Some salivary sheaths were terminated blindly and were sealed without reaching phloem tissues. Using confocal microscopy, the whole lengths of salivary sheaths in leaf tissue from the abaxial leaf surfaces to targeted phloem tissues are reconstructed dand projected in a 3-dimentional image.
