Interpretive Summary: Several factors should be considered before collecting field data for evaluating furrow irrigation erosion. Different results will be obtained based on where, when and how samples are collected. Erosion prediction and simulation technology for furrow irrigation is evolving. Models will be improved as our understanding of irrigation erosion increases. As new models are developed and current ones are improved, different parameters may need to be defined for furrow irrigation erosion.

Technical Abstract: Furrow irrigation is used on about 25% of the irrigated land in the U.S. The American Society of Civil Engineers Task Committee on Soil and Crop Hydraulic Properties is preparing a guidance document for evaluating surface irrigation systems. This paper describes measurement parameters and methods for assessing soil erosion when evaluating furrow irrigation systems.
