Technical Abstract: A joint Russian/American program funded by the International Science & Technology Center will explore the Russian Federation and the United States for fungal pathogens affecting insects and other invertebrates and to screen the resultant cultures for the production of compounds with activity against a broad range of pest insects, weeds, and microbes. Russian collecting activities will focus on regions around the Black Sea (Krasnoda Kray) and extreme southeastern Siberia (Primorsky Kray); the rationale for selecting these sites based on previous knowledge of or expectations about their insect fungi will be discussed with particular emphasis on the little appreciated but special importance of the Primorsky Kray. American collection activity will also focus on little explored environments such as the Alaskan tundra. Cultures derived from fungi will be co-deposited in the SRCAM and ARSEF collections in Russia and Ithaca, respectively, and will be grown and extracted for testing in a broad range of screens. The Russian cooperators will focus more on targets of agricultural importance while the American cooperators will focus more on pharmaceutical properties of any compounds. Compounds with especially interesting activities will be purified and at least partially characterized chemically; results of the work will be shared and intellectual property rights for new discoveries will be shared as appropriate under the terms of the agreement.
