Technical Abstract: Phytotoxic natural products (including allelochemicals) offer a great deal of potential in weed management. These compounds are usually toxicologically and environmentally benign and offer the potential for the discovery of new molecular target sites. Some of them can be used directly as herbicides, although few natural products have the proper combination of ftraits desirable in herbicides. However, these properties can sometimes b added by chemical modification of the natural compound. Another approach to deliver these natural compounds as herbicides is to genetically engineer adequate production of them into crops for weed management. This should only be done when barriers to gene flow to other species or even to other varieties of the same crop are in place.
