Technical Abstract: We summarize our efforts seeking FDA approval for two antibiotics to control the resistant bacterium that causes American foulbrood disease (AFB) of honey bees. The antibiotics are tylosin (marketed as Tylan) and lincomycin (marketed as Lincomix). These antibiotics were chosen for the following reasons: (1) in laboratory tests both were active against a Terramycin-resistant strain of the bacterium; (2) both antibiotics are structurally different from each other and from Terramycin, thereby reducing the likelihood of cross-resistance; and (3) both Tylan and Lincomix have current agricultural uses, which will facilitate the FDA approval process. We are seeking approval for these antibiotics when used as a dust (200 mg active ingredient in 20 g powdered sugar) for the control (not "prevention") of AFB.
