Interpretive Summary: The small red dry edible bean cultivar "Poquito Rojo" was released cooperatively by Washington State University and USDA-ARS (Prosser, WA) in 2001. Poquito Rojo is the first ever cultivar developed in the U.S. belonging to the "Central American Small Red" dry bean market class. With upright growth habit, multiple disease resistance, and stable yield potential the bean is well adapted to Pacific Northwest growing conditions. The bean will be produced primarily for export to Central America (Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and El Salvador) and to supply ethnic niche markets primarily in southern California and southern Florida. A remarkable feature of this cultivar is its excellent canning quality. It yields nice firm beans in the can with good red color retention. This cultivar will help to promote a new export market for U.S. growers and help to diversify the U.S. dry bean industry.
Technical Abstract: "Poquito Rojo" small red dry been (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) was developed cooperatively by the Washington Agricultural Research Center and the USDA-ARS and released in 2001. Poquito Rojo has an upright short vine growth habit, mid-season maturity, multiple disease resistance and is adapted to the U.S. Pacific Northwest. Its most unique feature is retention of a bright red color after cooking.
