Technical Abstract: Achievements in genomics (e.g., the complete sequence of the human genome) and transgenic animals (e.g., Dolly the sheep) strongly suggest that these technologies will play an increasingly important role in poultry at both the academic and industrial levels, as they already have done in many plant and other animal species. So the relevant question is "How could these technologies be applied?" In this review, we briefly summarize the status of poultry genomics and transgenics and the impact of these areas on poultry breeding and veterinary diagnostics discussed. It is the hope of the authors to raise awareness for people outside these two fields on how they could benefit from the knowledge and applications that are being developed at a very rapid pace.
