Interpretive Summary: The USDA-ARS potato breeding program, Aberdeen Idaho, was asked if potato varieties could be developed that were substantially lower in protein level compared with commercial varieties. This was for use in diets for individuals suffering from phenylketourea or other metabolic disorders requiring protein restricted diets. We screened all selections from the second field generation in 1995, along with standard varieties. Very few selections fell below the Russet Burbank protein level. In 1996 ninety varieties were tested along with the highest and lowest breeding selections from the previous year. Several released varieties were as low as any of the breeding selections. We can recommend Crestone Russet, Centennial Russet, Granola, Agria, and Ptarmigan as varieties that can be used in low protein diets.
Technical Abstract: The protein levels of 379 second field generation potato breeding selections were measured in 1995 to determine the range of protein present in cultivated potato grown under irrigated conditions in the northwest. One objective was to select low protein clones suitable for use in protein restricted diets. The mean percent protein on a fresh weight basis (FWB) was 0.95%. Only 12 selections were below the standard deviation from the mean of replicated Russet Burbank control plots (0.70% + 0.08%). The three highest selections had over 1.4% protein. In 1996 the clones with highest and lowest protein levels were retested, and 90 cultivars were also screened for protein levels. The mean % protein for the cultivars was 0.82% and median was 0.79% FWB. Atlantic, Lenape, Pilica, Russet Nugget, and Suncrisp were among the highest with over 1.1% protein FWB. Crestone Russet, Granola, Agria, Centennial Russet, and Ptarmigan were the lowest at less than 0.6% protein FWB. In subsequent years of testing, Crestone Russet and Granola continued to show protein levels as low as those of the 3 lowest protein breeding selections.
