Insecticidal compounds isolated from sweetpotato cortex tissues. Hortscience 36:851. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Crude extracts of sweetpotato (cv. Regal) cortex tissue showed significant antibiosis properties against early instars of diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella L.) larvae. Further fractionation of these extracts yielded three fractions which interfered with larval growth and survival. The fraction with strongest activity was further purified by HPLC and bioassayed. This fraction consisted of a mixture of compounds with simila physical and biological properties. Bioassays with first instar larvae produced an LD50 of 520 microgram per gram diet and 50% reduction in total live weight was obtained at 230 microgram per gram diet. |
