Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The effect of chemical structure of a conventionally refined and some chemically modified soybean oils on the oxidation stability and friction and wear properties of the oils are reported. Potential use of the oils as base fluids for hydraulic fluid formulations is considered. Tests were conducted using a multi-purpose wear tester and the Penn State Micro-oxidation Test. Selected blending was used to obtain desired viscosities and low temperature properties. Results obtained with and without selected additives are described and compared to commercial hydraulic fluids.
