Interpretive Summary: Scale insects include many kinds of agricultural pests including false soft scales (Family Stictococcidae). Unfortunately, important information on these pests is scattered, disorganized, and often is difficult or impossible to obtain. This situation greatly hinders pest management, biological control, and pest exclusion initiatives. The purpose of this research is to synthesize the known taxonomic information on false soft scales and place it in a database so that clients will have immediate access to accurate information on the group. The kinds of information included are: the currently accepted scientific name; common names; synonyms; host plants; distribution; biology; economic importance; and published references. Since this information will be available through a web query system called ScaleNet (http://www.sel.barc.usda.gov/ scalenet/scalenet.htm) it will give immediate benefit to all who are interested in the control, ecology, life history, pest exclusion, and pest management of false soft scales including homeowners, nurserymen, quarantine specialists, extension agents, and state and university researchers.

Technical Abstract: This is a catalog of the Stictococcidae or false scales of the world. The family includes 3 genera and 15 species that occur in Africa and are important pests of coffee and cacao. Information included is: scientific name, synonyms, common names, natural enemies, hosts, distribution, biology, remarks on systematics and morphology, publications that include keys, and references. This information is presented on the internet as an interactive database at www.sel.barc.usda.gov/scalenet/scalenet.htm.
