Title: VARIATION AND HOMOLOGY IN ELYTRAL MACULATION IN THE ANOPLOPHORA MALASIACA/MACULARIA SPECIES COMPLEX (COLEOPTERA: CERAMBYCIDAE) OF JAPAN ANDTAIWAN

Interpretive Summary: Longhorned beetles are very important to agriculture and the economy due to their destruction of wood during their development. Asian longhorned beetles of the genus Anoplophora have recently been established in the United States and efforts are being made to prevent their spread and further economic problems. We focus on the complex of Anoplophora species and subspecies occurring in Japan and Taiwan and examine the variability o elytral pubescence patterns on the outer wing. By documenting this variation, this study will aid in the identification of Asian longhorned beetles from Japan and Taiwan. This study will be important to port identifiers, regulatory personel associated with the APHIS-PPQ action agency, and scientists and laypersons concerned with woodboring beetles and exotic pests.

Technical Abstract: This study provides a description and assessment of elytral maculation and variation for the following Anoplophora taxa in Japan and Taiwan: Anoplophora malasiaca (Thomson, 1865), A. malasiaca tokunoshimana Samuelson (1965), A. macularia (Thomson, 1865), A. oshimana (Fairmaire, 1895), A. oshimana ryukyensis Breuning and K. Ohbayashi (1964), and A. ogasawaraensis sMakihara (1976). Elytral maculae are homologized and compared based on their position to each other and to elytral features. This study reveals much overlap in patterns of maculation among members of the malasiaca/macularia complex. Based on this variation, we conclude that elytral maculation alone should not be used to define these taxa.
