Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A recent series of studies have determined that several newly detected and distinct phytoplasmas are associated with phyllody of strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) fruit: strawberry multicipita (SM) phytoplasma (16S rRNA group VI, subgroup B), STRAWB2 phytoplasma (16S rRNA group I, subgroup K), clover yellow edge phytoplasma (16S rRNA group III, subgroup B), clover proliferation phytoplasma (16S rRNA group VI, subgroup A), and a new Group III phytoplasma, strawberry leafy fruit (SLF) phytoplasma (16S rRNA group III, subgroup K). The SM and STRAWB2 phytoplasmas were detected in plants with phylloid fruit that also exhibited stunting and crown proliferation (SM phytoplamsa) or stunting and leaf chlorosis (STRAWB2 and SLF phytoplasmas). It seems apparent that strawberry can be host to many distinct phytoplasmas and that symptom expression associated with phytoplasma infection is neither characteristic of particular phytoplasmas nor of 16S rRNA taxonomic groups of phytoplasmas. This information will benefit plant pathologists, extension personnel, and others concerned with identification and management of strawberry disease.
