Interpretive Summary: Insect cell culture is a major tool in biology, being used in such diverse fields as pest control (for producing and studying biocontrol agents and screening of biologically active chemicals), developmental biology, pathology, and in the pharmaceutical industry (for producing biologically active molecules). The success of insect cell culture is demonstrated by reports of over 500 established cell lines. While there are established procedures that can be used for developing new cell lines, these usually require some fine-tuning for various tissue sources. This paper attempts to depict some of the variations that can be applied. This information can be used by scientists in other government labs, industry or universities for producing new cell lines from a variety of 1nsects.
