Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A combinatorial approach has been applied to evaluate and optimize processes and analytical methods that are applicable to food and agricultural technology. Using fabricated and commercial instrumentation, we have used both parallel, serial, and sequential analysis to study extractions and reactions in SC-CO2, SC-CO2/cosolvent mixtures, and subcritical water. Parallel operations can be conducted on eight differen systems, while serial operation using a mixed matrix of experimental conditions can be routinely achieved on 24 samples overnight. Extraction of phospholipids, sterol esters, and cedarwood oil have been studied using a serial combinatorial scheme as well as sorbent screening for fractionations conducted under critical fluid conditions. The activity of enzymes/solid catalysts have also been surveyed with respect to reactions such as esterification, transesterification, or hydrolysis; the results being applied to testing and optimizing synthetic reactions in critical fluid media and analytical method development.
