N management and hypoxia: A research focus of the USDA-ARS National Soil Tilth Laboratory. Farm Bureau Members National Convention. American Farm Bureau Federation, Washington, D.C. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Nitrogen contamination of surface waters has been implicated as a major contributing factor to hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico, which has focused scrutiny on agricultural use of N fertilizers in the Midwest. The National Soil Tilth Laboratory established a research agenda investigating the links between N management and N contamination of water resources. Featured research topics will be the following: rate and timing of N fertilizer application and its impact on water quality; soil-N mineralization dynamics; soil organic matter relationships; tile drainage biofilters; plant-soil N relationships; and GIS and remote sensing applications for tracking N needs, inputs and fates. |
