Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Waste Management and Forage Research Unit of USDA-ARS, has started a program of applying poultry litter to land which has been in continuous cotton. The intent is to find a major economic use of poultry litter to reduce the pasture applications which may contribute to water pollution. This research determines the economic value of the poultry litter as a fertilizer for the cotton and the best method for application to the cotton. As part of a complete package, it will ascertain the safety of the applications and, in the future, determine the most economical ways of collecting litter from the poultry growers and distributing the litter to the cotton farmers. With assistance of Mississippi Farm Bureau, progressive cotton farmers are cooperating with USDA-ARS scientists to complete this research within the next four years.
