Technical Abstract: The date palm is adapted to high temperature and solar irradiation with a plentiful moisture supply. These conditions are present in the areas near rivers and oases in the subtropical deserts of the Middle East and North Africa. This is its center of origin and diversity. The date palm is one of the oldest domesticated crops and has a long and interesting culture and history. Date palms are also cultivated in the New World where conditions are appropriate.
