Technical Abstract: Through out the world, aflatoxin contamination is considered one of the most serious food and feed safety problems. Preharvest aflatoxin contamination in corn, Zea mays L., is a chronic problem in the southeastern U.S. This review summarizes recent studies conducted in our laboratories to characterize the resistance mechanisms in corn to aflatoxin ncontamination in order to lead to a long term strategy. Because of the complexity of Aspergillus-corn complex, a genetic solution through understanding the mechanisms of resistance in corn will be needed using conventional and molecular breeding for improvement of southern U.S. adapted corn lines to manage and control aflatoxin contamination. Genetic improvement of corn resistance to stresses and transgenic approaches will provide a good perspective on the control strategies of aflatoxin contamination. The understanding and knowledge gained through the research will help our long-term goal of applying advanced bio-technology to identify traits that can be used in the prevention and control of preharvest aflatoxin contamination in corn.
