Technical Abstract: There are three programs of great significance to global soil moisture mapping and research. These are the Soil Moisture Mission (EX-4a), the Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission, and the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometers (AMSR) on Aqua and ADEOS-II. There are basic science issues that need to be addressed to make these missions successful. Many of these are the same for each program and require field experimentation. SGP99 attempted to address some of these issues. Results of this experiment, primarily aircraft and satellite microwave remote sensing, will be summarized. A follow-on experiment is planned for the summer of 2001. One objective of this experiment is to validate the soil moisture products planned for the Aqua AMSR that will be launched in December 2000. Another objective is to extend the range of vegetation conditions to include higher levels of biomass in order to provide a more rigorous evaluation of retrieval algorithms. The final objective is to demonstrate new instrumentation and approaches for the remote sensing of soil moisture. Efforts will be made to include new techniques and configurations.
