Technical Abstract: Gossypol is toxic to non-ruminant animals. It exists as two optically active isomers due to restricted rotation around the binapthyl carbon- carbon bond. A number of studies have shown that the (-)-isomer is significantly more biologically active than the (+)-isomer. We have now shown that the (+)-isomer is significantly less toxic to male broiler chicks. The ratio of (+)/(-)-gossypol differs significantly among different cotton cultivars. The genetics that control this ratio has been partially defined.
