Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Alternaria solani, the causal agent of early blight, is an important foliar pathogen of potato worldwide. Few cultivars have resistance to early blight. With the emphasis on the use of fewer pesticides, resistance would be useful in disease management. A diploid hybrid Solanum phureja x S. stenotomum F1 population segregating for late blight resistance and the two late blight resistant parents were evaluated for early blight resistance at Rock Springs, PA, in a randomized complete block design with two replications. Inoculum was from natural sources. Percentage of disease foliage was visually assessed in each plot on 4, 11, 17, and 31 Aug., and area under disease progress curve (AUDPC) was calculated. There were significant differences among the F1 clones for early blight resistance. AUDPC ranged from 361 - 2460 with a normal distribution. The average AUDPCs for the two parents were 1331.3 and 1988.8. There are F1 clones that have high levels of early blight resistance. The data also indicated that the disease resistance is polygenic. A QTL map will be developed to localize the resistance genes among the potato genome.
