AN EVALUATION OF THE PSA STUDENT CERTIFICATE OF EXCELLENCE AWARD PROGRAM 1974-1999. POULTRY SCIENCE ASSOCIATION MEETING ABSTRACT. 2000. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: From 1974 through 1999, the Poultry Science Association awarded 315 Certificates of Excellence (COE) to 275 different students. In an effort to analyze the program, data were collected from official Association records, from host institutions, and on occasion, by direct contact with the principals. The data base included the student's name, year of award, gender, degree (if available), type of presentation (oral or poster), section, major professor, membership status (1999-2000), and publication record in Poultry Science. Of the 275 individuals recognized, there were 240 one-time, 30 two-time, and 5 three-time awardees made up of 177 males and 98 females. The most awards were presented in the nutrition section (100) followed by physiology (72), environment-management (38), processing and products (34), genetics (25), pathology (24), and extension-instruction and immunology (11 each). Students from Texas A&M received 36 certificates followed by NC State (31), Georgia and Illinois (23 each), California (14), Arkansas (12), Auburn, Cornell, and Wisconsin (11 each) and Iowa (10). An examination of the publication record in Poultry Science by COE winners exhibited a positive correlation between major professor and student publication numbers, but there was no relationship between publications in Poultry Science by institution and the number of awards. Males on average had more publications in Poultry Science than females, but the reasons for the difference are unclear. Although differences in award profiles exist, an assessment of the impact of the COE program is difficult based on available data. |
