Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Investigation of resistance to Phytophthora infestans in 2x(1EBN) wild potato germplasm included individuals from Solanum cardiophyllum subsp. cardiophyllum (cph) and Solanum pinnatisectum (pnt). Replicated detached leaf tests using the P. infestans isolate MSU 96 (US-8 A2) detected susceptible and resistant individuals within both species. F1 hybrids from an interspecific cross between S. pinnatisectum and S. cardiophyllum, resistant and susceptible respectively, segregated for resistance. A backcross family was generated between a resistant F1 and the susceptible S. cardiophyllum parent. Segregation of 42 resistant to 57 susceptible BC1 progeny suggests a single dominant locus controlling resistance. Marker analysis was conducted using clones uniformly distributed over the genome. Linkage analysis has located the resistance locus on the long arm of chromosome 7, a region previously unassociated with resistance to P. infestans.
